The value of charging at hotels cannot be underrated. Superchargers are not everywhere, and other slower chargers are not always very close to lodging options. Often the best solution is to charge while you sleep.
I recently went on a trip to the Central Valley in California. Tesla has a number of superchargers in the Central Valley primarily along the I-5 corridor from the Los Angeles area to Oregon. But the superchargers are not extensive throughout Central California. For example right now you cannot go to Yosemite, tour through Yosemite and return without using non-superchargers.
Finding hotel charging is a bit tricky. Tesla has a newer map available under their Find Us / Charging section of their web site but it only includes superchargers, service centers and Tesla High Powered connectors available to the public. When looking in the Central Valley near Yosemite on this webpage, you will note one located in Groveland and another located near Mammoth Mountain but no charging in Merced, Madera, Fresno or along any southern entrances to Yosemite.
The charger at Mammoth Mountain is for hotel guests only at the Westin Monache Resort. The Groveland Hotel is very conveniently located for travelers to Yosemite from the San Francisco Bay Area. The charger is free for hotel guests and $5 for other visitors. This charger is a great option for those going to Yosemite and wishing to go up to the high country.
My preferred way to find hotel charging alternatives is to use the Tesla only version of the plugshare website at tesla.plugshare.com. Within this website you can select “Hotels Only” to find great places to charge while you are sleeping. Within a smaller just near Yosemite entrances from California, this map quickly shows four places to charge on the way to Yosemite: the aforementioned Groveland hotel from the north, and three alternative hotels (Best Western Plus Yosemite Gateway Inn, Tenaya Lodge and Homestead Cottages) from the southern entrance. At the moment, there is no hotel charging near the central entrance.
I recently spent a day in the Central Valley and needed to stay overnight in Fresno, using this app I quickly found the most convenient place to charge, which is the Best Western Plus Fresno Airport Hotel
The Hotel chargers are right in the front of the hotel. They are Sun Country chargers. Sun Country is a Canadian company. The hotel clerk stated that the chargers are not very busy so charging there was very easy and much more convenient than any other option.
Surprisingly, this is only the second time I have charged at a hotel charger. On my cross country trip this fall, I only charged at a hotel once in St. Louis. I did however spend many nights at hotels located within walking distance of superchargers.
