Renewing Insurance

I had an interesting experience this year dealing with my insurance on my two cars.  I have a 2013 Tesla Model S and a 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

When I was driving the Roadster, I ended up driving the Highlander more miles than the Roadster.  Although I drove the Roadster daily, the Highlander was used quite frequently for hauling stuff around, driving on dirt roads, ski trips, road trips and any time I had more than one passenger. So for insurance purposes I had 2/3 of the mileage on the Highlander and 1/3 on the Roadster.

My policy with AAA came up again this last month.  When looking at the numbers I found it surprising that the total premium for the two vehicles were very similar.

Looking at this in more detail, I realized I had a lower mileage number on the Model S than was realistic for the future and far too much mileage on my seldom used Highlander.  I called AAA and switched the Tesla to the higher mileage and ended up saving myself $232 per year.

I never would have thought that a newish Model S would be cheaper to insure than a eight year old 4WD hybrid Toyota!  I asked the person on the phone why this was the case but she had no explanation.
